Malakal, South Sudan – August 4, 2025
Malakal’s displacement crisis has fueled a surge in gender-based violence (GBV), with women and girls facing heightened risks of rape, forced marriage, and abductions. The UN reports that the influx of over 572,000 returnees and refugees since April 2023 has exacerbated protection concerns in Upper Nile State, where Malakal’s PoC site houses 46,000 people. Conflict-related sexual violence is rampant, often used as a weapon by armed groups.
“Women are not safe, even in the camps,” said Elizabeth Chol, a 30-year-old survivor receiving support from UNFPA. The collapse of health and protection services limits access to care for survivors, with only 25% of health facilities functional. UNICEF notes that children, especially girls, face exploitation and trafficking risks.
Aid agencies are establishing safe spaces and providing psychosocial support, but funding shortages and insecurity hinder efforts. The UN calls for $100 million to address GBV in South Sudan, urging global action to protect Malakal’s vulnerable women and girls.
